WonderFest is a weekend of hobby escape that's held every Summer in Louisville, Kentucky USA! It features movie special effects guests, the largest model contest in the U.S. for sci-fi, horror & comics-related subjects, model and toy dealers galore, and seminars to entertain and improve hobbyists of all ages!
Unfortunately, not everyone who wants to attend Wonderfest is able to make it. This site is here to help bring Wonderfest to those who would otherwise be there. Over the course of Wonderfest Weekend, This site will be updated with pictures, videos, and podcasts from all the action in Louisville.
If you can't get to Wonderfest, then we'll do our best to bring Wonderfest to you! Content will start being posted Friday, May 26th after 6 pm Eastern Daylight Time. |

Wonderfest Trip Log |

Thursday, Day One |
2:00 pm - Departed Grafton, WV for Louisville, KY. We're off on the road to Wonderfest! Sing it, Bingo! 11:30 pm - Rolled into the Executive West after driving through a thunderstorm we could have SCUBAd through. SCI-FI U Tomorrow!
First site update! |
Friday, Day Two |
Got up this morning to meet my fellow SSM'ers for
coffee and some breakfast, before attending SCi-Fi University, sponsored
by CultTVMan and Federation Modelers. Even though I've been modeleing since
I was a kid, I learned a helluva lot. Took a road trip to Ft. Knox in the
afternoon to hit the Class VI, and got lost in a maze of roads that must
have been designed by an epileptic during a particularly bad seizure. Made
it back to the hotel just in time to get our passes for tomorrow and
appear in the Lizard Lounge attired in properly hideous Hawaiian shirts to
claim our free drink. Thanks, Griff! |
Saturday, Day Three |
The first Official Day of Wonderfest. As this is my first Wonderfest, all I can say is Oh. My. God. There are people here with more talent in their little finger than I have, or could ever hope to have, in my entire body. I wandered around the dealer's room from 8:00 am (Earlybird, of course!) until 4:00 pm, flabbergasted at the incredible work the dealers put up as display pieces. It wasn't until after 4 that I made it up to the contest room, where I was stunned once again by the amazing work. The day ended with the SSM pool party and swap meet, where I dumped a large moving carton of parts into the middle of the parts table, only to narrowly escape loosing my fingers, and possibly my life, in the styrene and resin feeding frenzy. John "OneZero" Lester gave a moving toast to the crowd, and those absent friends we lost during the past year, or who could not make it. Talked to my wife (who stayed at home, but she has GOT to come next year!), and went to bed after posting a TON of pics, exhausted but happy. |
Sunday, Day Four |
Wow! Another full day. Things didn't get started until 10:00 this morning, so I got to sleep in a bit. After hosing down in the rain locker (that translates to taking a shower, for you non-sailors), we headed down to the breakfast buffet, O.D'd on coffee, and caught Sean Sides' presentation on constructing the 66 inch TOS Enterprise that he unveiled at Starfest last month, and had on dispay here as part of the Trek 40th anniversary celebration. I went from there for another pass in the Dealer's Room to take pics of the display pieces I missed yesterday. I haven't been this overwhelmed since the first time I went to the Air and Space Museum. It took me four days to take that all in, and here I only get two. No wonder I missed some stuff yesterday! I caught a presentation on painting eyes and using glass eyes in figure modeling, and by the time that was done, it was off to the awards presentation. I'm happy to report that one of our own SSM'ers took best in show! (No, I'm not gonna give it away! That's up to John and Linda, or the talented modeler who won.) I WILL reveal that the winning model was one of the "109 Challenge" entries...That oughta put a thorn in a few IPMS members sides...The Anti Banquet was highlighted by the CoMMiES presenting John "OneZero" Lester with one of their contest entries: a diorama of "Slave OneZero," a Firespray in USMC garb, delivering a raiding party on the SSM Store. We topped things off in Das Phule's suite, with "Blapfest." There was much beer drinking, story swapping, and model-showing to be had. Once again, I am going to bed a very tierd, very happy camper. This weekend went by WAY too fast. Only 363 days until Wonderfest 07! |
